> **Short answer:** book a beginner group class, wear smooth-soled shoes, come alone or with a friend, and expect to dance a simple pattern by the end of the first hour.

## You do not need a partner

This is the most common question. In group classes, leaders and followers rotate every few minutes, so everyone dances with everyone. Coming alone is normal, and rotating partners actually makes you a better dancer faster because you learn to lead or follow anyone.

## You do not need rhythm yet

Instructors count out loud and start slowly. Finding the beat is a skill you learn in class, not something you need before you walk in. Salsa and bachata music both have clear, repeating patterns that become easy to hear after a few classes.

## What to wear

- **Shoes:** a smooth sole that lets you pivot, such as leather-soled shoes, dance sneakers or flats. Avoid grippy rubber soles and anything that slips off.
- **Clothes:** anything comfortable you can move and sweat in.
- **Skip:** long dangling jewelry, bulky bags on the floor, heavy perfume.

## Your first month, week by week

| Week | Typical focus |
| --- | --- |
| **1** | Basic step, finding the beat, one simple turn |
| **2** | Side basic, leading and following, holding a frame |
| **3** | Cross-body lead (salsa) or side-to-side turns (bachata) |
| **4** | Linking moves together to a full song |

After about two to three months of weekly classes, most students feel ready for their first [salsa night](https://brownsvillesalsaclasses.com/latin-dance-events/).

## Class etiquette

- Say hello and thank each partner when you rotate.
- Keep connection light. A firm frame is not a tight grip.
- If a move feels uncomfortable, say so. Good partners adjust.
- Bring water and a small towel.

## Frequently asked questions

### Am I too old to start salsa?

No. Adults of every age start salsa and bachata. Classes move at a beginner's pace.

### What if I have two left feet?

Beginner classes are designed for people with no dance background. Instructors count and break every step down.

### How often should I take classes?

Once or twice a week is ideal. Practicing the basic at home for a few minutes between classes speeds things up.

### Should I take salsa or bachata first?

Bachata is usually easier to start. Salsa is faster and has more turns. Many students take both.
