What bachata is
Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic. The music is led by guitar, bongo and güira, and the dance follows a four-count pattern: three steps and a tap or hip accent on the fourth beat. Because the basic is simple and the tempo is slower than salsa, most people feel at home in their first class.
Bachata styles
Dominican bachata: the original style, with quick, playful footwork and an open hold.
Modern bachata: mixes Dominican steps with turns and patterns borrowed from salsa.
Sensual bachata: developed in Spain, with a closer hold, body waves and smooth flowing movement.

Bachata or salsa first?
Many Brownsville students start with bachata because the basic is easier, then add salsa within a few weeks. The skills carry over: timing, leading and following, and connection with a partner. See the full salsa vs bachata comparison.
